Family Memories
The Wonders of Nature: One morning I watched my 2 year old grandaughter holding a small flower. She had picked it from a crack in the sidewalk. She stood still for several long moments, studying the flower, her face with an expression of wonder. It was a dandelion, considered a weed by many. To her, it was as fascinating as a cultivated rose. Several years later, I had the pleasure of taking a "nature walk" with another grandchild. We picked some wild flowers, took them home and pressed them. I helped her write something beneath each flower. We made a little book and had a very special present that evening at a family birthday dinner. The variety of plants is endless. As a child, I remember we had a "sensitive plant". When we touched its leaves, they immediately closed around our fingers! After a few minutes, the leaves opened again. What a delightful surprise!
Article from our Tri-City Herald, (front page) Saturday, November 24,2007 Have fun with TickleMe Plant GET THIS "Daddy, come quick my plant just moved when I tickled it," daughter Rebecca screamed to her father, Larry Chipkin. Thus began the success of the TickleMePlant seeds that Chipkin now sells. What's a TickleMe Plant? Native to Brazil, TickleMe Plants can be found growing wild there and in other tropical areas. The scientific name for the TickleMe Plant is Mimosa pudica. It also has been called shy plant or shy grass, sensitive plant and other names throughout the world. "We simply planted the seeds in a flower pot of soil, watered it and the plants sprouted in days," he says. "Two weeks later, we tickled this sensitive plant and watched in amazement as the plant closed its leaves and lowered its branches. Then, within 15 minutes it lifted its fernlike branches and opened its leaves." A packet of seeds is about $5.95. Growing kits are available. Visit www.TickleMePlant.com.
