When you fly over a small Island in the upper New York bay, 2 miles from the southern tip of Manhattan, you will see a tall statue.Holding high a torch in her right hand, she represents Freedom. At the base of the statue are the words,"Give me your tired, your poor...Send these..." The Statue of Liberty represents the freedom we enjoy.
It was past this statue at Ellis Island that my mother landed. As a young child, she worked in the lace mills. Later, after she married, she taught herself to read and filled our house with books.
She knew the value of one of life's greatest gifts-Reading. She was a "born" teacher. Her own children were her students.
As grandparents, we have the privilege of enouraging our grandchildren to enjoy reading and discovering the many riches they will find with the Gift of Reading.
SUGGESTION: When you send a book to your grandchild, be sure to write a short note and sign your name in it. Remember..It will become a precious keepsake.
